Put simply, a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code is a five-digit code used by Companies House and the Office for National Statistics to identify and categorise the principal business activities of UK limited companies.

SIC code examples
Start with what the business actually does, rather than its name. For example:
- 62020: IT consultancy.
- 70229: management consultancy other than financial management.
- 56101: licensed restaurants.
These are examples, not automatic matches for every business in those sectors. Check the full description in the Companies House condensed SIC list before choosing a code.
How do I find the right SIC code?
Choose the code that most closely describes the company’s main business activity. If more than one code appears relevant, use our SIC code search to check the current descriptions rather than relying on an old list.
When do I need a SIC Code?
When registering a company, at least one SIC code from the condensed list must be provided. Up to four SIC codes can be used where a company carries on more than one type of activity.

Can I change my SIC Code?
SIC codes are confirmed and can be updated on the confirmation statement. If the company’s activities change, the relevant code can be updated when the next statement is filed.
